TCM/HERBS/FORMULAS COURSE DESCRIPTION
FOUNDATION OF TCM (I, II, 102, 103)
The fundamental theories of TCM consist of physiology, etiology, pathology, and the principles of disease treatment and prophylaxes. In addition, the TCM theories also include some critical Chinese classical philosophy concepts, such as the Yin/Yang theory and the Five Elements theory, which are the basis of TCM applied in the methods of recognition and analysis. On the completion of courses of FND101 and 102, students will have a comprehensive knowledge of TCM theories, which would be beneficial to students´ subsequent studies.
DIAGNOSTIC OF TCM (I, II, 104, 105)

NEI CHING
Huang-ti Nei ching (The Canon of Internal Medicine) is the earliest TCM classic that has been discovered to date. It is a masterpiece that has the most influence in the development of TCM and is considered to be the bible of TCM. It forms the theoretical basis of TCM and has built a strong foundation for the development of TCM in the past millennia. Thirty selected chapters of this masterpiece will be studied in this course on the aspects of medical theories, philosophies, and academic characteristics, and their guiding roles in clinical applications.
WEN BING XUE
Wen Bing Xue (Doctrine of Epidemic Febrile Disease) ideals with the occurrence and developmental laws of epidemic febrile disease and its prevention. Selected readings of this TCM Classic will enable the students to have a better understanding of the causes, etiology, clinical manifestations, prognosis, diagnosis, and treatment of epidemic febrile diseases and their prevention.
SHANG HAN LUN
Shang Han Lun (Treatise on Colds and Fevers) is a TCM classic specializing on infectious diseases caused by exogenous wind and cold factors, and the differentiation from other diseases. It is a comprehensive masterpiece on TCM diagnosis, management and herbal formulae, combining TCM theories and clinical applications in a close-knit fashion. In this course, students will learn the methods of analyzing and differentiating the clinical manifestations of infectious diseases caused by exogenous wind and cold factors, and the treatment protocols using the "Theory of Six Meridians" and the "Eight Classifications of Diseases" as advocated by Zhang Zhong-Jing in the Han dynasty. Emphasis will be placed on understanding Zhang´s way of thinking and rationalization and applying it to build a strong foundation in TCM practice.
JING GUI YAO LUE
Jing Gui Yao Lue (The golden chamber of treasures: prescriptions and formularies) is another TCM classic written by Zhang Zhong-Jing in the Han dynasty. It is the earliest writing that has been discovered that deals mainly with the clinical diagnosis and treatment of "internal diseases". At the same time, there are 3 chapters that deal with gynecological diseases. Jing Gui Yao Lue provides a higher level of teaching, and the practical value in theories and clinical applications of TCM contributes greatly to and etches a lasting image in the subsequent development of medicine in clinical practice. This course would allow students to have a better understanding of the close relationship among the clinical manifestations, etiology and pathogenesis of diseases to the students, helping them to master the diagnostic techniques, analysis and differentiation process, and learn some effective herbal formulae, building a strong foundation for clinical practice.
TCM INTERNAL MEDICINE
TCM Internal Medicine is an important course of clinical medicine, and is also the principal course in TCM, the foundation of clinical application in all other specialties. In this course, students learn about the manifestations, nature and spheres of diseases of internal medicine, their classifications, symptomatology, etiology and therapeutics. Students will study more than 50 common diseases in internal medicine, their etiology, clinical manifestations, pathogenesis, diagnoses, differential treatments and prognosis.
TCM EXTERNAL MEDICINE
TCM External Medicine. This course will introduce students to the basic theories in TCM External Medicine and treatment techniques. Students will learn about some commonly encountered diseases in TCM External Medicine, such as dermatological infectious diseases, diseases pertaining to the breast, tumors, anal and intestinal diseases, sexually transmitted diseases, and diseases of the urinogenital organs, their etiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment.
TCM GYNECOLOGY
TCM Gynecology is one of the main TCM courses. This course helps students to master the TCM differential diagnosis, treatment and management of some common gynecological problems such as menorrhagic disorders, vaginal discharges, embryological conditions and pregnancy, with emphasis on the female physiology, pathological characteristics, and practical aspects in clinical situations.
TCM PEDIATRICS
TCM Pediatrics teaches students the fundamental knowledge in Pediatrics, some commonly encountered and epidemiological diseases and neonatal diseases. Emphasis will be placed on the physiological characteristics of infants and children, etiology, pathological characteristics and clinical manifestations of these diseases, differential diagnosis and treatment, and nutrition and proper diet.
TUINA (409, 501)
Tuina is one of the three major TCM treatment modalities. Students study the fundamental Tuina theories (Tun 409), 30 basic manipulation techniques and clinical applications in some common conditions in adults. In the learning process, emphasis will be on hands-on practice of the manipulation techniques on specific parts of the human body. In intermediate course of Tuina (Tun 501), Students will learn how to use Tuina to treat certain common diseases, applying Tuina theories and manipulation techniques in the treatment process. TUN 501 is the pre-requisite course of TCM 404H.
CLINICAL INTERN
Clinical Intern are a series of intern courses aimed at improving students´ clinical ability. Student will cope with various clinical tasks under the instruction of lecturers or qualified doctors. The clinical training they receive will gradually enable them to provide appropriate and effective acupuncture treatment and Tuina therapy in a proficient manner, preparing them to become qualified TCM practitioners.
